Golf:
The Chelan Goats golf team made the trip to Cascade for a CTL matchup and delivered a strong performance on a challenging course.
The boys came away with a decisive win, continuing to build momentum late in the season. Every varsity golfer finished with a score under 100โan impressive feat given the difficulty of the course. Connor Draggoo stayed hot with back-to-back rounds of 88, while Grant Coonrod matched him with a personal record 88 of his own. Carson led the charge in spectacular fashion, firing a blistering 31 on the back nine to pace the Goats. Wyatt Sather also had a solid day, tying his season PR with a 98.
On the girlsโ side, the Goats battled hard but came up just short in a very close match. Hallie continued her outstanding run of consistency, carding an 87 and proving sheโs one of the most reliable players in the lineup, with scores in the 80s week after week.
Despite the tough course, both teams showed resilience and growth. The Goats are clearly finding their rhythm at the right timeโhaving fun, improving, and gearing up for postseason competition.
With the final week of the regular season ahead, the focus is clear: keep building and finish strong.
Go Goats!
Tennis:
On Friday, April 24 and Saturday, April 25 the Chelan Boys and Girls tennis teams competed in the 79th Inland Empire Tennis Championships in Spokane. This is the largest high school tennis tournament in the nation, drawing all of the top programs and players from Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho. This year there were 57 schools spanning all WIAA classifications, 798 athletes, and 11 sites with over 90 courts.
The Goats had an exceptional showing this weekend, again placing 1st in the 1A classification. Chelan was 13th overall out of 57 schools spanning all classifications despite not entering a full roster (no mixed doubles). Chelan was by far the smallest school in the top 20!
In #1 girls doubles, juniors Alison Horner and Brooklyn Foyle nearly busted the bracket, but fell short by the closest of margins to #2 seed Wenatchee in the opening round 4-6, 6-3 and then 9-11 in the 3rd set tiebreaker. The girls followed that up with two solid wins, 6-4,6-2 over Mt. Spokane and 6-1, 6-1 over East Valley Spokane, which qualified them for extended play on Saturday. Foyle and Horner began Saturday with another narrow loss to host Ridgeline 5-7, 4-6, but finished the day with an impressive 6-2, 6-0 over Sandpoint (ID) to finish 7th overall.
In #2 girls doubles, junior Maddie Cowan and sophomore Lizzy Hutchinson also made an impressive Friday run. They defeated West Valley Yakima 6-3, 6-0 in their opener, won 6-2, 6-3 over Prosser in round 2, and 6-4, 6-4 over Royal in round 3. Unfortunately Maddie and Lizzie came up short against the #1 seed and eventual bracket champion Mead in the loser-out quarterfinals.
In #3 girls doubles, juniors Reese Bordner and Josie Bekel also compiled several victories. After falling to #1 seed Mead in the opener, Reese and Josie responded with back to back victories 6-0, 6-0 over Connell and 6-4, 4-6, 10-8 over West Valley Spokane to qualify for Saturday. On Saturday, the girls won their consolation semifinal 7-5, 6-4 over Post Falls (ID), but fell short in the consolation final 4-6, 7-6, 3-6 to Prosser. Bordner and Bekel finished 6th overall!
In #1 girls singles, senior Estee Flynn began Friday with a dominant 6-0, 6-2 win over Rogers, but finished her day with a 3-6, 2-6 loss to Ferris.
In #2 girls singles, senior Keely Collins played the best tennis of her HS career. After an opening round loss to Central Valley, she rattled off three straight wins plus a forfeit: 6-1, 6-2 over Rogers, 6-4, 6-1 over East Valley, 6-3, 3-6, 10-5 in the consolation semifinals vs Grandview, and then a consolation finals forfeit to Southridge. Keely placed 5th overall!
In #1 boys doubles, senior Wade Sanderson and sophomore brother Owen also showcased a deep Friday run over large schools: 6-3, 6-2 over Lake City, 6-3, 6-2 over Chiawana, and 6-4, 6-0 over Moses Lake. Unfortunately their tournament ended with a loss to #3 seed University in the quarterfinals. However, the Sandersons played some of their strongest tennis of the season.
In #2 boys doubles, senior Nick Diaz-Manda and sophomore Loen Moody drew an unfortunate opener against #1 seed Meed (noticing a Mead theme here?!), and had their day end in round 2 against Central Valley. Tough matches against tough large school opponents, but good experience.
In #3 boys doubles, senior Sean Rynd and junior Cooper Neff put together a solid showing. Following a very close opening round loss to Coeur D’Alene 4-6, 5-7, Sean and Coop won their next two Friday matches 6-0, 6-4 and 6-4, 6-2 to qualify for Saturday matches. In their consolation semifinal, Rynd and Neff took down Royal City 6-4, 6-2 before coming up short against East Valley 4-6, 2-6 in the consolation final. Sean and Cooper finished 6th overall!
In #1 boys singles, junior Angel Mendez lost his opener 3-6, 3-6 to Liberty Bell, but rebounded with a 7-5, 6-2 win over East Valley Yakima. In his 3rd match Friday, Angel lost a heartbreaker 6-2, 0-6, 8-10 to Grandview.
In #2 boys singles, junior Elijah Moody also lost a heartbreaker 0-6, 6-3, 6-10 to Central Valley, scored an illness forfeit over Lakeside, but ended Friday 1-6, 3-6 to Lake City.
